Nordic-ness....

For the last week or so Canmore has been hosting the Alberta World Cup, it's a cross country ski event with athletes from all over the world in attendance and seems to have been quite a big deal in town. The World Cup racing events were all a part of the Canmore Nordic festival which meant that there were all kinds of fun things going on for us non XC ski folks too. An athletes village was set up right in the middle of town with a "Snow Farmers Market" featuring all kinds of local artisans, an outdoor big screen  (complete with blanket-covered hay bales for seating) to show the races live from the Nordic Centre up the hill and Christmas movies when the racing was done for the day. Every corner of Main Street had a fire pit complete with sticks and marshmallows for toasting :) The pond in town was busy with families skating to Christmas tunes, playing hockey and drinking hot chocolate. All this together with the ice sculptures, twinkling lights and Christmas carols turned Canmore into just about the loveliest winter scene you could imagine. As we wandered around enjoying the wafts of the wood smoke and soaking up the atmosphere we bumped into a few familiar faces, friends of Seb's from school and people we've met since arriving in Canmore and I felt the first little tingle of connection to this place.
Like Tofino, Canmore is a small town with big character and I'm quite enjoying being a part of it.

Wow Sophie, you've sure captured all the most precious moments of World Cup downtown! It was so magical. Watching the Grinch en plein air while sitting on hay bales and eating freshly toasted marshmallows was perfect.

Thank you for your nice comment Marty, I was thinking that my photos didn't quite do the evening justice, it really was quite magical!
